Oakland Unified School District Wellness Policy Presentation 2015-2016

Why Do We Have A Wellness Policy? Districts that Receive Federal Money for School Meals MUST have Wellness Policy. Hold OUSD accountable for wellness efforts.

What’s IN the Wellness Policy? Guidelines on Wellness of the Whole Child (EIGHT areas) Full of related policies and regulations that support Health & Wellness

Schools are helping children eat well and stay healthy.... 1. Nutrition Schools are helping children eat well and stay healthy.... Breakfast Lunch Supper Snack Standards Food Guidelines Water

2. School Gardens Outdoor “classrooms;” Integrated in many curricular areas; Guidelines for consistent management.

3. Physical Education and Physical Activity Fit students do better in school; Required PE minutes; Modifications, as needed; California Physical Fitness testing.

4. Comprehensive Health Education OUSD is working toward comprehensive Health Education throughout the District. Sex education currently in all secondary schools

5. Positive School Climate Schools should be safe and respectful places for learning. Keep students in school.

6. Physical School Environment Safety plans. Safe routes for walking and biking. Reduce health risks. Reduce “environmental footprint” (recycling and composting).

Health Care/Social Services School-Based Health Centers. Enrollment for Health insurance/social services program. On site health services. Behavioral health services.

8. Staff Wellness Safe supportive working conditions for staff. Staff as role models.

9. Assessment and Communication A District committee (comprised of key stakeholders) oversees the implementation and assessment of the Wellness Policy.

How Can I Support the OUSD Wellness Policy? Join the Site Wellness Council; Advocate for site implementation of the Wellness Policy; Volunteer in garden or cafeteria; Become an OUSD Wellness Champion!
