Five Themes of Geography 8 th Grade Geography
1) Location The world in spatial terms- you look to see where things are. Absolute Location- Exact location on the Earth’s surface. Relative Location- Express location where a place is in relation to another place
2) Place/3) Regions Place describes the physical and human characteristic that made a location unique. Regions are areas that share common characteristics Place—physical characteristics such as landforms, climates, and plant or animal life. It might also include languages and way of life. Region-Places united by one or more characteristics.
4) Movement/5) Human Environment Interaction Movement explains how and why people and things move and are connected. Human-Environment Interaction describes the relationship between people and their environment. Physical systems, such as hurricanes, volcanoes, and glaciers shape the surface of the earth. How do plants and animals depend on one another and their surroundings for survival? People shape the world in which they live. Why do they settle in some areas and not others? How does the relationship between people and their natural surroundings influence the way people live?
