Implementing the Code and the Standards of the ENSH by Regional Working Groups in Germany Christa Rustler German Network Health Promoting Hospitals & Smoke-free Hospitals Uta-Sophie Bemmann Regional Working Group South Germany

Development of the DNGfK Foundation of the DNGfK members with over 70 hospitals and about beds 5 regional working groups National Co-ordination for the European Network for Smoke-free Hospitals since September 2003 Partnership DNGfK and ENSH

Regional Working Groups Health Promoting Hospitals

Regional Working Groups with Smoke-free programs Bavaria Northrhine- Westfalia South Germany

Smoke-free Hospital Project Bavaria & South Germany Decision for the project with all the hospital managers in June 2004 Workshop for Smoke-free Hospitals in the National Conference September 2004 Workshop October 2004 with project leaders: -Health risks and consequences through smoking and passive smoking -Tobacco dependence and smoking cessation -The role of Hospitals and Health Care Workers in tobacco control -Discussion of the results of the ENSH self audit

Self-Audit in the Working Groups South-Germany & Bavaria (9 Hospitals)

Feedback after the Workshop More systematically approach to a defined target than single actions We identified areas of improvement and we know now what to do We adjusted our activities and set a higher priority on training and support for the staff There is a higher motivation to implement the ENSH- Code and we are more confident of success We have a better information and better arguments for the implementation process We got helpful information from the other hospitals by discussing the results of the self audit

Planned activities of the Working Group Regular meetings on regional level Training for the project leaders in the hospital Improving the performance in each hospital Application for the Bronze Certificate until July 2005

What happened? Regular meetings on local level with reports and sharing experience  Training for project leaders was cancelled Use of the Manual for Project leaders for smoke-free Hospitals and the ENSH Implementation guide Active hospitals took over work packages Text for patient information survey for employees information for employees

Results of the project (until now) One hospital already received the Bronze Certificate two hospitals applied for the Bronze Certificate and one applied for the Silver Certificate Partnership in the Smoke-free project of the Health Ministry in Bavaria: –1 st Bavarian Conference for Smoke-free Hospitals June 1 st in Munich

Requirements for success Commitment of the management Accessible target and resources Co-ordination for the Working Group and in each hospital (project management) Regular local meetings Support through training and guidelines Regular reports and reviews

Benefits of a Regional Working Group Sharing experience helps to avoid „re- inventing the wheel“ Inspiration and support for the project leaders Success of the network by developing and exchanging good practice Results of a group are better recognised than a project of a single hospital

Thank you for your attention!
