EARTH ART CORY RATHBURN

Main Ideas Used natural and organic materials. (gravel, water, soil, etc.) Would use the organic material to construct their piece. This would show the beauty of the specific landscape.

Major Influences The 1960’s and 70’s was a very experimental time for art, so many new ideas were coming around. Earth Art was influenced by Minimalism Art, which as the name implies, is very minimal and simple art. A major influence was Virginia Dwan, who created a gallery to commemorate this movement.

Time Period Earth Art became popular in the late 1960’s, and remained popular until the late 80’s. Like said before, the style became popular when Virginia Dwan created her gallery.

Major Artists and Artworks Robert Smithson ( ) – Was a major artist. Known for his piece “Spiral Jetty.” (1970) Richard Long (1945-Present) – Was a well-known artist, most recognized for his artwork “A Line Made by Walking.” (1967) Michael Heizer (1944-Present) – Was very popular, known for his work “Double Negative.” (1970)

My Reflection In my opinion, Earth Art is the best style of art. I know there are plenty of different styles, and plenty of different artists, but to me, this is my favorite. What I like about Earth Art is its simplicity. Most art pieces can mean many different things, and can be overthought. Earth Art though, is very self-explanatory. It doesn’t usually have any deep meanings, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s a good type of art to put on your wall, and leave it for looks. It may not have had many big influences on our society, but I think it’s a great thing to look at and calm yourself down in rough times.

Activity -Pick 3 different colors. -Think of one of your favorite places or landscapes and draw it. -This could be anything like a mountain, beach, forest, or ocean. -Try to keep the picture simple, but detailed.
