THE INTERNET WHAT IS IT? WHERE IS IT? HOW DOES IT WORK? TIGER WU / KEVIN PARKS

THE INTER-WHAT? The internet is a method of connection between two people, a host and a client. The internet sends information through 1s and 0s by utilizing radio waves and now fiber cables.

HISTORY OF THE INTERNET History attempted other methods in delivering information with Telegraph, Braille, and Semaphore. During 1970, there was no standard method for networks to communicate. Vint Cerf and Bob Khan invented the Internet Protocol for such a standard to develop, IP for short.

TRANSMISSION OF INFORMATION Information can be sent with electricity, light, and radio waves. The on and off of electricity represents 1 and 0. Electricity introduces a clock, which is agreed by both sides that there will be one signal sent in a certain period of time. By sending light through a fiber cable, they will bounce along the edges of the cable and eventually be received by the receiver. We send information wirelessly by converting the bits of information into FM and AM radio waves.

PROS AND CONS OF TRANSMISSION METHOD Electricity is cheap, but can sometimes have loss of signals. Light is fast and no signal loss, but is quite expensive. Radio wave is wireless, and more convenient, but it could result in signal loss.

ADDRESS (WHERE YOUR INFORMATION LIVES) The IP address is a unique identification for a device by using a string of numbers. The standard IP addresses consist of numbers that can be made up with 32 bits of information. That is what we refer to as IPv4, designed in 1973, and adapted in We now are transitioning towards IPv6, because there are so many devices around the world that IPv4 is not enough. IPv6 consists of 128 bits of information through the use of Hex code.

DNS (…I HAVE NOTHING FOR THIS ONE) DNS is short for Domain Name System. When you’re connecting to a specific website, you use the DNS to look up the according IP address of the domain. The DNS communicates with other DNS and form a system where they can look for IP addresses that could not be found by one. Different DNS becomes responsible for large empires of domain, such as.com,.net, or.org.

WEB BROWSERS (INTERNET EXPLORER FTW) Web Browser is an application that allows you to connect to the internet. Then you type in the URL to specify the page you wish to visit. URL, also known as Uniform Resource Locator. Web Server is a host of sites that will communicate to your device with HTTP

HTTP (THE LINE THAT NO ONE TYPES) HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP for short is a language that two computers use to communicate with one another. The HTTP mainly consists of “Get” requests, which is basically a request to get a document or image or whatever you’re looking for on the server. Or other times you will send a “Post” request, which delivers the information that you wish to give to the server for identification or other purposes.

HTML (THE STRUCTURE OF A WEBSITE) HyperText Markup Language, or HTML for short is essentially the language that the server uses to tell your device how to make a web page look. HTML code examples are,,,,, so on and so forth.

APPLICATION PORTS (YOUR COD ID NUMBER) Application Ports contains different numbers/ids that the computer can recognize and connect to for the transfer of data, they are sometimes referred to as TCP or UDP. Different application have different port numbers, so that there won’t be any faulty connections. Example: Call of Duty have a different port than Counter Strike, they both use TCP and UDP, but Call of Duty’s port number ranges between 20500, 20510, 28960, while Counter Strike ranges between 1200, ,

PHP (CODING IN A CODING) PHP is a web scripting language that can be embedded into HTML, known as Hypertext Preprocessor. PHP is used to process information that is given to the server from the user and outputs something back.

SCRIPTS (THE CORE TO PROGRAMS) Script is a type of programming language that programs written environment that automates the execution of a task Scripting languages are often interpreted Scripting is used to enhance web pages within browser software and to automate tasks with in the operating system Examples are: Visual Basic, C#, JavaScript, etc.

JAVASCRIPT (RUNESCAPE) Used for client-side scripting of dynamic content for web pages JavaScript was originally developed for one of the earliest Internet browsers called Netscape. Mostly used to develop dynamic content within regular web pages in or HTML

ACTIONSCRIPT Is an object-oriented programming language Designed for website animation Creates onscreen environments that can respond to a user input such as a keyboard or mouse
