EXPRESSIONS This is what expressions are…. By Shayde

NO EQUAL SIGNS! Expressions have no equal signs. Why? You simplify to the simplest for. E.G: 5x -3x + 7s+17s Simple form: 2x +24s Only EQUAtions have = signs b/c they are used to solve. E.G: 7+7=14

VARIABLES Expressions have variables. Variables are letters, only lower case, that are put next to numbers. Why lower case, because we often see it and we can get mixed up with the upper case when we’re doing coordinates, etc. E.G: 7s, 3x, 2y For 1, it’s just a variable because a variable equals 1. E.G: a + 3a Answer is 4a SOMETIMES, they can be unknown numbers/values.

COEFFICIENT Coe. (Coefficient) are a number used to multiply a variable in an algebraic expression. E.G: 5r, 5 * r

PROPERTIES There are 3 properties. Distributive property: 7(3r *x) + 3(9r * 3x) 1st step: 7 * 3r = 21r | 7 * x = 7x 2nd step: 3 * 9r = 27r | 3 * 3x = 9x 3rd step: 7x + 9x = 16x 21r + 27r = 48r Answer: 16x + 48r Commutative property: 7s + 7s +3x - 8f – f |1st way 1 step: 8f – f= 7f 14s + 3x – 7f | 2 nd way 1 step: 7s +7s = 14s 2 nd step: 8f – f = 7f Answer: 14s + 3x – 7f Associative: 7t + 3t +5t = (7t + 3t) + 5t Answer is 15t

CONSTANTS Constants are just a fixed value. It’s on it’s own in an expression or equation. E.G: 7s is the constant

TERM Term is a single number, variable, or a number + variable together. E.G: 3r + s + 17 are all terms

EQUATIONS Equations are the opposite of Expressions. Like I said, they have equal signs and they are always SOLVing. 2 nd definition: A mathematical statement that has the values of 2 expressions E.G: 7s + 3 = 17

BYE, look it up for more if you’re curious.
