I. French and Indian War A.War between England and the French and Indians over the Ohio River Valley -Land between the Appalachian Mountains and Mississippi River
II. Colonists’ Role A.The Americans during this time period were still considered part of the British empire. Therefore, they fought along side the British. B.George Washington, eventual leader of Americans against the British in America’s war of independence, fought with the British. *Colonel in British Army in 1753 *Becomes leader of Virginia Militia
III. Treaty of Paris (1763) A.England wins the war in 1763 and signs the Treaty of Paris (1763). -England gains French lands in North America *most of Canada *present day U.S. from Appalachian Mountains to Mississippi River B.French can leave and go back to Europe. Native Americans have no place to return to. *wars between Americans and Native Americans for control of land will last hundreds of years.
IV. How does this lead to conflict between the British and Americans? Reason #1: British are in heavy debt because of the French and Indian War. British decide to tax the American Colonists to try to raise money back. *Americans won’t like taxes because they have no say in the British Parliament- “No Taxation Without Represenation” Reason #2: Proclamation Line of British tell the Americans they cannot move past the Appalachian Mountains because they didn’t want any wars to start between the colonists and the Native Americans. *British didn’t want to pay to protect them *Americans felt they fought for the land, they should be able to settle it.
