Restoration Colonies

The English Civil War Thirty Year's War: Charles' imperial ambitions—> overextension--> clash Parliament : Parliament (esp. Puritans) vs. Charles I '48: regicide--> Commonwealth--> '53-58 O. Cromwell's Protectorate 1661: Charles II and Stuart Restoration--> Proprietorships (raise money w/o taxes): Penna., NY, NJ, Carolina

Types of Colonies Charter: contract for how colony was to be run; usually high self-government (elections, little crown interference)‏  1775: Connecticut, Rhode Island Royal: “direct” Crown control--> appointment Governor + Governor's council; election assembly (main power: provide Gov salary)‏  1775: NH, Mass., NY, NJ, VA, NC, SC, GA Proprietary: sim. Royal, replace king w/ proprietor (William Penn, Lord Baltimore)‏  1775:Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware

New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey New Amsterdam  New York (Duke of York) Duke’s Laws: recognize reality on ground (interracial/ethnic; multiple languages; history of self- government; functioning economy; religious diversity; etc.)  slow to grow, dominated by Boston New Jersey + Pennsylvania: Quakers  religious toleration, peaceful negotiations w/ Indians, easy terms for land  population explosion (esp. NE)  Irony #1: good terms w/Indians  pop. explosion  conflict w/ Indians (after W. Penn gone)  Irony #2: “best poor man’s country”  lack of white servants in Chesapeake  importation slaves
