C 7 MODES PROJECT

Modes (Writing Genre) Description or Narration (tells a story) Process Analysis (step-by-step instruction) Compare and Contrast Division or Classification (categories) Definition Cause and Effect Argument or Persuasion

Relevance (Why now?) We’re in the argument unit – Kids like to lecture 7 Modes help you control your writing and tone HOW Helps you focus on HOW you’re saying it Forces you to collect R.O.E. (What you’ve read, observed, experienced)

Steps In groups of 4-5, focus on ONE assigned mode Research your group’s assigned mode Teach the class how to write in that mode Learn how to write in all 7 modes Individually write about ONE topic in all 7 modes Each mode of writing will be 500 words or less, no more

Presentation Power Point Each group member needs to speak Will be graded on your effectiveness by your classmates Presentation should be minutes long

Topics Anything you want it to be! That topic that teachers have always told you “No” General enough that it can fit into the different modes Example mode titles for the topic of “dating”… Narrative: “My first date” Definition: “What exactly is a date these days” Compare and contrast: “Changes in dating between 1915 and 2015” Cause and effect: “How Facebook has affected dating” Persuasion: “Why you should go out with me”

Important Dates November 10 th (next Tuesday) Lab 127 – Assemble Power Point Presentation November 12 th & November 13 th (Next Thursday & Friday) – Group presentations November 16 th & 17 th – Lab 127 write your 7 modes (only class time you’re going to get) November 18 th & 19 th – Writing evaluated by mode groups Revise 7 modes over Thanksgiving Break November 30 th (Monday after break) - All 7 final drafts modes due

Today’s Tasks… Exchange contact information Tell your group mates the topic you’re thinking of doing Help each other come up with possible mode titles for your chosen topics
