FCA 201 Power Tools Power tools are covered by legislation and you must fully comply with the following;

Power tools The provision and use of working equipment regulations 1998 (PUWER) The abrasive wheels regulations 1974 The protection of Eye regulations 1974 The health and safety at work act 1974 (HASAWA)

Summary of Power tools Power drills Powered planer Routers Portable circular saws Jigsaws Sanders Cordless tools

Safety first. Only use powered hand tools if you have been authorised to and have been given correct training Never use without permission Be familiar with the power tool and practice first before embarking onto greater things Always use the correct tool for the job if in doubt ASKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK.

Power tools Check the condition of the tool itself and of the cutters used. Are they fitted correctly? Ensure the correct power supply. Do not mix voltages. Ensure plugs, cords etc are in good condition Ensure the lead is fully uncoiled before using Always use fitted safety guards correctly.

Power tools All power tools are now made with double insulation and should be stamped with a double insulation sign and kite mark This will be seen on the label or ID tag attached to the tool itself

Power tool maintenance Most power tools are designed to operate over a long period of time with minimum maintenance. However regular attention to powered hand tools improves safety and ensures efficient working They should be cleaned regularly (especially important with cutting and abrasive tools as they create dust and could damage the motor) This may mean a daily clean for the tools whilst in use.

PRE USE CHECKS Damage to wires Damage to plugs Exposed bare wires Cracks in machine casing Burn marks on plug pins Tooling securely fixed All guards intact and secure
