Presentation transcript:

A Quick History of New York Media Mainstream (Print) Media: The old, main newspapers—The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are sometimes referred to as “broadsheets” and are thought to be more professional and better written The New York Post, Daily News, and Newsday are considered by many to be a mixture of a traditional newspaper and a tabloid (sometimes called a “rag”)

Media Bias? In its editorial and op-ed opinions, the New York Times trends to the left, while The Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Daily News trend to the right The New York Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News New York Times, while never endorsing Bush, supported the invasion of Iraq

Summarizing When you write a summary, all you want to convey is the main idea or gist of the story – Who? – What? – Where? – When? – Why? – How?

Analyzing When you analyze an article, you are reading beyond the basic facts and writing about what the article implies – What is the tone? – Is the author suggesting anything? – Is there a bias towards one side or the other?
