Separation Lab
Pre-Lab Calculations A beaker has a mass of 184 grams. Then sugar is added to the beaker. The mass of the beaker and sugar together is 196 grams. What is the mass of the sugar added?
Pre-Lab Calculations Empty Beaker has a mass of 124 g. 10 g of salt was added to the beaker. An unknown mass of sugar was added to the beaker. The beaker with the salt and sugar had a mass of 137 g. What mass of sugar was added?

Pre-Lab Calculations
What is the % by mass of C in CH 4 ?
Pre-Lab Calculations What is the % by mass of F in HF? What is the % by mass of N in KNO 3 ?
You will be given a mixture of iron, sand, and salt. You must determine the % by mass of each of these 3 substances in the mixture. Think about the Pre-Lab when determining your procedure. 1) Each group will write your procedure PLAN with your white board marker. 2) When this is approved by Ms. Britigan, then do the lab. 3) Each student will write a lab report.
Materials Available Two 100mL beakers One 250 mL Erlenmeyer Flask One Funnel One Piece of Filter Paper One Magnet One Stirring Plate with Magnetic Stirring Rod One Balance (to share) Container of mixture
Separation Lab Report: Due F 9/11 Written or typed on your own paper. Problem: Determine the % by mass of each substance in the mixture. Procedure: describe, in detail, what you did. – BONUS: include pictures / diagrams Data: organized data tables with numbers and units Analysis: show all calculations in an organized fashion Conclusion: state the calculated % by mass of each substance in the mixture Discussion: what were possible unavoidable sources of error? What could be done better if this lab were repeated?
