Warm Up You will be given 5 minutes to answer the following: How might understanding historical content help you understand historical literature? After 5 minutes has elapsed, you will “turn and talk”

Objective- SWBAT draw connections between Greek and Roman literature.

Sayings of Virgil You will be shown a video clip titled “Sayings of Virgil”. Interpret one quote from the video.

Virgil was one of ancient Rome’s greatest poets. In addition to being a poet, Virgil served as a member in the court of Emperor Augustus. What might you infer about Virgil being that he held both jobs? (Turn and talk)

Augustus asked Virgil to write a poem to honor Rome after Augustus defeated his rivals and took power. Virgil wrote the Aeneid, retelling the Greek legend of the battle of Troy from a Roman point of view. Who can recall the Greek story regarding the battle of Troy? (Turn and talk)

In the Aeneid, Virgil modeled his work on the earlier works of the Greeks, just like many other Romans did at this time.

As a class, we will read an excerpt from “The Aeneid” and answer the following questions: Does Anchises think that people in Rome will do everything better than people in other places? What will Rome do best?

Independent Practice Answer the following based upon the excerpt from “The Aeneid” What is the purpose of Anchises speech to Aeneas? What parts of the passage show that purpose? What does Anchises describe as the “Romans” art

Group Work Review the final paragraph for the main idea behind Anchises conversation with his son. How do you think Emperor Augustus might have felt about Virgil’s poem? Why?

Closure Groups will be called on to share their responses.

Homework Study for test!
