Calling a Consult

Spend time figuring out correct person to page –right service –right level – resident or fellow or attending Include your pager number with call- back number ( 65441* ) Tell consultant who you are: –name, 3rd year med student on ___ service

Calling a Consult Tell consultant the specific question (or questions) you wish the consultant to answer – not the full story. If you do not know this information, you are not ready to page the consultant. Put this info in progress note too. Indicate urgency of situation (especially if need consultant to come right away)

Calling a Consult Ask how much clinical info you should relay –just few quick summary sentences –or more info Provide requested info When done providing clinical info, ask if anything else consultant wants to know (including your attending’s name)

Calling a Consult In anticipation of help, express gratitude (say thank you) Make sure patient knows a consultant should / may come by
