Finding the Equation of a Quadratic Function
You need your scatterplot notes! When we found the equation of a line of a set of points in a scatterplot, we found the linear regression. For a set of points that don’t make a line, they MAY be in the shape of a parabola. In that case, we would find the QUADRATIC regression. So, you will graph the dots the same way. But, instead of finding the line of best fit or trend line, you will find the quadratic regression.
Example 1 Use the points in the table to the right to find the equation. y = 2x 2 – 8x - 1 xf(x)
Example 2 We Fly High Airlines tracked the number of flights from Chicago to Pittsburgh since This data is shown in the table at the right. Which of the following equations best represents this relationship? A.y = 0.25x 2 + 3x + 16 B.y = -0.25x 2 + 3x + 16 C.y = 0.25x 2 – 3x + 16 D.y = -0.25x 2 – 3x - 16 YearFlights
