Chapter 16 Notes Downriver

How does Troy reveal his plan? He shares a bottle of tequila the other rafters gave him, and the group begins drinking. Troy suggests that, after Grand Canyon, they all go to Mexico and live.

Why does conflict erupt between Freddy and Troy? Rita taunts Troy and he pushes her down. Freddy steps in to stop Troy. Pug defends Troy with a knife; Freddy knocks it away. Troy and Pug leave and apparently get the scorpion from Adam’s gear and put it in Freddy’s sleeping bag. Freddy is stung.

What happens after the scorpion sting? Freddy, terribly ill, “retreats into himself” to find inner strength to defeat the poison. Under Jessie’s guidance, they slip the boats into the river, leaving Troy and Pug behind.
