8.1 ADDING AND SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS To classify, add, and subtract polynomials.

MONOMIALS  A real number, variable, or product of numbers and variables.  A single term  No addition or subtraction  Examples:  18 ZZ  -4x 2  2.5xy

DEGREE OF A MONOMIAL  Sum of the exponents of its variables  Degree of a constant with no variables is 0  Ex:  5x  Degree 1  6x 3 y 2  Degree 5 44  Degree 0

DEGREE OF A POLYNOMIAL

PRACTICE

ADDING POLYNOMIALS  Add vertically:  Line up like terms then add coefficients.  Or add horizontally:  Group like terms then add coefficients.

SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS  Subtract vertically:  Line up like terms and subtract.  Change all signs like with elimination.  Subtract horizontally:  Distribute the negative then group like terms.

ASSIGNMENT  Odds p. 489 #9 - 43
