ICELAND

BOUNDARIES Iceland is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean about 800 kilometers from Scotland and 300 kilometres from Greenland. It is characterized by an intense volcanism (over 200 active volcanoes) including.

CLIMATE Iceland has a cold temperate oceanic climate, summers are so very fresh while winters, despite the latitude, are quite mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream.

TERRITORY Iceland is an area with eruptions and earthquakes. The territory is mostly mountainous and undulating, the plains are confined to the coastal area. There aren’t many plains because Iceland has volcanic origins. There are numerous volcanoes, many of which are active. Iceland is also famous for the ice that covers the 12%of its surface, it is called the land of fire and ice. The principal rivers are: Þjórsá (Thiorsa) and Olfusà. The sea is the Atlantic Ocean.

HISTORY The The Iceland is an island discovered by Viking navigators and colonized by a group of Norwegians. After 1000 it was Christianized, but Christianity found it hard to establish itself (stentò ad affermarsi). It was dominated by Denmark until the 20th century.

POPULATION Iceland has a population of people and a population density of 3,2 people per square km. The official language is Icelandic, the official religion is Protestantism. Iceland is a republic.

IMPORTANT CITIES The capital of Iceland is Reykjavìk, the other “cities” are, inevitably, all along the coast. In addition to Reykjavìk, always South, are Hafnarfjorour, Kòpavogur, Selfoss and Keflavìk, home of the international airport. The most important island is Vestmannaeyjar.

ECONOMY Agriculture is hampered (ostacolata) by the climate. You can only grow potatoes, vegetables and fruits. Breeding: fur-bearing animals (animali da pelliccia) and sheep. Main industries: fish processing, aluminum and iron production, geothermal power and hydropower. Tertiary sector: exporting fishery products and energy; tourism. The main imports are machinery, oil products, foodstuffs and textiles The currency that is used in Iceland is the Icelandic crown of Iceland.

TIPICAL FOOD Waffles: sweet of Anglo-Saxon origin similar to a crepe stuffed with jam, honey, chocolate.

AURORA BOREALIS Iceland is one of the areas where it is easier to observe the magnificent spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, a true marvel of nature. The months when you can most frequently observe(ation) on average range from September to mid April.
