Renaissance

What? A “rebirth” Intellectual changes ◦ artistic, social, scientific, and political thought turned in new directions. Economic changes ◦ a time of financial growth

Where, When? Began in Italy and then spread to the rest of Europe

Who? Gutenberg – printing press Leonardo da Vinci – science, engineering, art Michelangelo - art Shakespeare – literature Medici Family – business and political power Catholic Church – cultural, political and economic power

Why New wealth from trade, industry, and banking created money and leisure time to study, think, and create. Contact with the wider world – Europeans benefitted from advanced Arabic and Asian technology and learning.

Why? The humanists rediscovered Greek and Roman writings on scientific matters, government, rhetoric, philosophy, and art. They were influenced by the knowledge of these ancient civilizations and by the emphasis placed on man, his intellect, and his life on Earth.
