By Rachel Rogers Mr. Bundy March 16, 2015 Psychology

  Born in July of 1857  Died in October of 1911  Alfred Binet was born in Nice, France. His parents divorced when he was young and he was primarily raised by his mother. Later Binet gained a degree in law but chose not to follow that as a career. He instead was given permission as a reader at the Bibliothèque nationale de France where he studied psychology. Alfred Binet Biography:

  Unlike most psychologists in his day, Binet was not interesting in illnesses of the mind, rather he was curious as to how the day-to-day mind of an average person works. He was intrigued by how our brains grow, how we think, and how we reason out problems. This lead him to get into intelligence testing. Intelligence Testing:

  Binet originally developed a test of about 30 task test that became increasingly difficult in order to test the knowledge of school-age children. One of the reasons he created this test was to determine any child who had a potential to fail. The Intelligence Test

  In these tests he included multiple aspects involving general intelligence. This could include the ability to perform simple social aspects, memorization, reasoning, problem solving, and attention span. Aspects of the test

  Some of the tasks Binet included would be simply shaking the hand of the instructor, reciting back a series of numbers, finding rhymes for a word, counting change, or a problem that uses reasoning skills.  One such problem would be "My neighbor has been receiving strange visitors. He has received in turn a doctor, a lawyer, and then a priest. What is taking place?" (Fancher, 1985). Testing Tasks

  Binet and his co-worker Simon developed a scaling system for the test called the Binet-Simon Scale. Together they realized that a child’s intelligence was different and would have to measured differently. They based the scale on chronological age.  Levels of Classification:  Average : mental age matches chronological age  Advanced : mental age is higher than chronological age  Retarded : mental age is lower than chronological age Scaling the Tests
