Forming Questions in Spanish
Presentation transcript:

 In Spanish there are three ways of asking a question with a yes/no answer.  ¿ Elena habla español?  ¿Habla Elena español?  ¿Habla español Elena?  Each question asks for the same information and has the same meaning. The subject can be placed at the beginning of the sentence, after the verb or at the end.

 Questions that begin with a question word such as “cómo” “qué” and “dónde” always put the subject after the verb. An accent is also added to the stressed vowel in the question word.  ¿ Cómo es Elena?  What is Elena like?  Elena es bonita y simpática.  Elena is pretty and friendly.

 Spanish doesn´t use “do” or “does” in questions the way English does. The subject, verb, question word and question marks are enough.  ¿ Elena habla español?  Does Elena speak Spanish?  ¿Cuántas clases tomas?  How many classes do you take?

 To make a sentence negative in Spanish, place the word no in front of the verb.  Yo no tomo café. Tomo té.  I don´t drink coffee. I drink tea.  If the answer to a question is negative, no is used twice. The first no means “no”, the second means “don´t”

 ¿Estudias ciencias políticas?  No, yo no estudio ciencias políticas.  Do you study political science  No, I don´t study political science  Tu mamá trabaja en una escuela.  No, ella no trabaja en una escuela. Trabaja en un hospital.  Does your mom work in a school?  No, she doesn´t work in a school. She works in a hospital.
