Midwifery mentor scenarios Mentor update Plymouth University

Scenario 1  You are working with a year 2 student when you are involved in caring for a woman who suffers a major obstetric haemorrhage and is transferred to intensive care.  What issues do you need to consider in relation to the student midwife (both immediately and subsequently)?  If you have concerns about her practice, what do you do?

Scenario 2  A third year student asks you to help her write her learning objectives at the start of her final 6-week placement with you. What do you discuss / advise the student?

Scenario 3  A 2 nd year student asks if she can work with you as she is “not rostered to work many shifts with her sign off mentor” and states she will have better continuity working with you.  What do you need to know / find out….  What are your subsequent actions……

Scenario 4  You are working with a year 3 student. You have had your caseload planning meeting and she is keen to start caring for women under indirect supervision.  What factors do you need to consider when she asks you about this?

Scenario 5  You are working with a 2 nd year student for one week whilst her sign off mentor is on annual leave. The student asks you to sign her timesheet for the previous week as well as the day you have just worked with her. What do you do and why?

Scenario 6  A first year student says that one of the clients she cared for in labour has asked her to be her friend on Facebook.  What do you do and why?

Scenario 7  A 1 st year student you are allocated to mentor for 4 weeks has been late for handover on several occasions, and today has not turned up at all (it is now mid-shift) nor phoned in.  What are your actions and why?

Scenario 8  After working with a second year student for two weeks, you feel she does not appear to be working at the level you would expect at the end of second year. She tends to ‘stand back’ and is not proactive when providing clinical care. She is allocated to work with you for 6 weeks in total and requires a tripartite at the end of the placement.  How do you proceed?
