What led to the American Revolution?

Timeline The French and Indian War Proclamation of The Stamp Act 1767 Townshend Act 1770 The Boston Massacre 1773 The Tea Act 1773 The Boston Tea Party 1774 Intolerable Act

French and Indian War  France and Britain were fighting over territory in Canada and land in North America located between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River.  Both the British and French had Indian allies.  The British government sent in armies and the British won Canada and the land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River.  ons/imaps/maps/g2_u2/index.html

Proclamation of 1763  The British decree prohibiting colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains.  This reserved the lands for Native Americans because King George did not want to pay for British Armies to stay and protect the land. He hoped this would prevent wars with the Indians.  The colonists were furious they could not settle the new lands.

The Sugar Act 1764 Colonists must pay tax on any goods coming to the colonies from another country. Loyalists agreed with King George. A loyalist is “loyal” to Britain.

The Quartering Act 1765 Colonists must let the British Soldiers live with them. They also have to take care of them and feed them!!

Stamp Act of 1765 Stamp Act - Every newspaper, pamphlet, and other public and legal document had to have a Stamp, or British seal, on it. The stamp, of course, cost money. The effect of the Stamp act was that the colonists boycotted all paper goods.

“No Taxation without Representation!!!”  King George began taxing the colonists.  The Parliament governed the colonies all the way from London!  The Colonists felt this was unfair to be taxed when they had no one to represent them in London.

Townshed Acts of 1767 Taxes on glass, paint, oil, lead, paper, and tea. Britain tricked the colonist into paying taxes that were used to pay British officials. The colonist boycotted all goods from Britain.

Boston Massacre March 15, 1770 Colonist were angry and began to call the British “Lobster Backs” and “Red Coats”. They began to throw snowballs at the British soldiers. The effect was that it showed the dangers of having British troops in the colonial towns, and the King withdrew the troops.

Group of School boys tease the British Soldiers. Guard calls for help. British gun went off and then more shots followed. 5 Colonist died. Crispus Attucks-First African American hero of the American Revolution.

Tea Act of 1773 The Tea Act lowered the tax on tea bought from the British tea company. This hurt the tea business in the colonies and they still had to pay taxes on tea. The angry colonists protested by not buying tea from the British, and forbid the British ships in their harbors.

The Boston Tea Party 1773 The Sons of Liberty were a group of American men who fought for liberty and freedom. Disguised as Mohawk Indians, they boarded ships, opened up tea crates, and threw all of the tea into the Boston Harbor.

Boston Tea Party 1773 British ships refused to turn away and anchored in the Boston Harbor. The Sons of Liberty dressed up like Mohawk Indians and boarded British Ships late at night. They dumped 340 chests of tea into the harbor! “Rally Mohawks bring your axes and tell King George we’ll pay no more taxes!”

Intolerable Acts Upset about the Tea Party. Britain closed the Boston Harbor.

The Continental Congress All the colonies except for Georgia sent a representative to Philadelphia to meet. They decided to stop all trade with Britain.
