Topic based learning As part of our topic this term, our learning will include learning about local inventors and scientists and the changing role of women in society. They will look at the important role women are now playing in science and how women's place in society has changed over time - we will look at he role of the Suffragettes in light of the General Election coming up on the 7 th May. Pupils will be able to name a number of local inventors and scientists and write biographies about them They will be able to recognise and describe the importance of science to their learning. Pupils will be able to start to understand what it means to be a scientist/inventor and they will try to work in groups to come up with some inventions of their own We are going to base a lot of our learning around scientific topics and the pupils will be designing and carrying out some of their own investigations. Global Citizens Alongside global citizenship comes global responsibility. Pupils will apply the lessons learned from their Come and See world religion topics to society in Britain today. They will be encouraged to regard everyone as equal in the eyes of God. We will look at the importance of difference as a way of celebrating the diverse society we all live in. Creativity and Love of Learning Through imaginative topic based learning, pupils can make real life links and find a purpose to their learning. We aim to encourage pupils to learn from science relate this to their everyday life. We link this to a historical context to a number of artistic projects to make the learning more real. The whole child – Spiritual, Moral and Personal We will consider the importance of being a caring and sensitive person, mindful of all our friends needs and wants. Pupils will continue to take part in weekly SEAL teaching. This is aimed at encouraging all the pupils to make informed choices about their behaviour and consider the effect of their actions upon others. Skills for Life Weekly Number Fun!! Pupils will learn the essential life skills of number calculation. Every Monday we will focus in on a single operation and practice the written strategies needed to solve different problems. Every Friday will compose of both a times table challenge and a mental maths calculation paper. Oh to be an inventor! Communication, Language & Literacy Through our writing we will explore how language choices have changed over time and how the choices pupils make when writing affects its meaning. Pupils will be taking part in a poetry competition and recital with other local primary schools. Pupils will be encouraged to take part in a number of group and individual presentations and drama activities. Religious Education During this term, as always, RE will shape many of the things we do each day, with Christ being at the centre of our school. Using the diocesan resource, Come and See, we will study: Transformation, Freedom and responsibility and Stewardship. Pupils will also cover the Islam topic from the Come and See resource. Mathematics This term pupils learning will include the following: Number, Place Value and sequencing All 4 operations + - x ÷ using both written and mental methodologies including weekly challenges Fractions including decimals & percentages Solving multiple step word problems using a wide variety of different units of measurement Mental calculations including speed tests calculations without calculators Geometry: position, direction and motion Shape and space Algebra and numeric equations French Our pupils are fortunate to be taught by a language specialist who comes in every week to work with all KS2 pupils. Using ICT & I-pads We will use ICT to present information for a variety of different audiences. We will continue to use Scratch as a programming tool on the I-pad. Learning, Thinking & Social Skills We are continuing with the regular brain teasers and puzzles to help develop problem solving, resilience and determination. Pupils will continue to access the SEAL resources and to show how working collaboratively is always better than working separately. Weekly homework Every pupil needs to complete a reading task, read a minimum of 3 times, revise times tables and complete the written homework task. School Trips It is hoped that we can go on a couple of visits this term. We hope to go to both the Discovery Museum and the Hancock Museum and then on another day we would like to go up to Cragside. Alongside this I would like to take the pupils out on regular walks around the area – particularly on the Derwent walk – weather permitting. Some year 5 pupils are also going to take part in an outward bound residential activity in July. Scientific Understanding We will be working on a number of practical activities illustrating the importance of fair testing techniques and critical thinking skills. Music Y5 pupils will continue to have Flute lessons every Friday morning. I’m sure that as they grow in confidence we will invite parents to come and listen to some tunes they have perfected! All pupils take part in fortnightly hymn practice. D & T Skills and Art Pupils will make a 3D model of a moving vehicle which will support their understanding of the role forces play in moving vehicles. This will build on the forces work we started last term. We are going to design some Suffragette election posters and then look at technical designs and drawings supporting their work on inventors. Physical Education This term we will develop their ability to play team games. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to take on the role of team coach and/or umpire. Pupils will also be working on their athletic skills for the new athletics season. (PE will normally be on a Tuesday and a Friday afternoon. Year 4 pupils will still be swimming on a Tuesday afternoon and whenever possible the Year 5 pupils will be outside on a Tuesday afternoon – please ensure your son/daughter has trainers and a jumper.)
