Presentation transcript:

Colonial American Portraits Who created them? The artists who moved from England or who were trained in the English style. Artists often traveled from city to city to find work.

Colonial American Portraits What are they? Artworks of important people, like George Washington. Everyday people could buy a miniature portrait for less money.

Colonial American Portraits Where were they created? In the American Colonies, with ideas, techniques, & styles from England. People would “sit” for their portrait, so it would be accurate.

Colonial American Portraits When were they made? From the late 1600s-the late 1700s, during the colonial period in America.

Colonial American Portraits Why were they created? -So families could remember how relatives looked. -To show love for someone. -To show wealth, importance, occupation.

Colonial American Portraits How were they created? Artists learned how to paint & draw in England, or they worked with an experienced artist. They used paints, like oil & watercolors. Artists would charge based on how difficult the portrait would be to paint. Smaller, less detailed portraits were less.

Colonial American Portraits Locket Portraits -Small, usually oval or circle shape -Worn as jewelry or put into a pocket -Watercolors painted on ivory -Painted for special occasions
