BELLRINGER Create a note-taking foldable 1. Fold a sheet of paper in half along the long axis. 2. Turn the paper and fold it into thirds. 3. Unfold and cut the top layer along both folded lines. This makes three tabs. 4. Draw two overlapping ovals and label – Verbal – Communication - Nonverbal

Building Communication Skills Communication – the exchange of information through the use of words or actions. There are three parts of communication – sender, receiver and message. The better communicator you are, the healthier your relationships.

Types of Communication Verbal – expressing feelings, thoughts or experiences with words, either by speaking or writing. Non-verbal – getting messages across without using words.

Communicating Effectively Speaking Tips 1. Think about what you want to say. 2. Use “I” messages to express your thoughts, feelings, needs and expectations. 3. Use tact, the sense of what to do or say to avoid offending others. Not rude. 4. Make clear, simple statements. Be specific. Use examples.

Communicating Effectively Listening Tips 1. Use body language – lean in, look directly at the speaker, nod and respond with facial and body movements. 2. Take advantages of pauses in the conversation to offer encouragement and make connections. 3. Don’t interrupt. 4. Mirror what you hear – repeat or rephrase.

Communicating Effectively Writing Tips 1. Make the message clear – proof it. 2. Without the tone of your voice, you’ll need punctuation and CAPS to communicate feelings. 3. Practice writing by journaling. 4. Instead of always talking on the phone, send letters or s to keep in touch. 5. Never write anything down that you don’t want everyone to know.
