Biotic Relationships:
Symbiosis.
 Symbiosis Objective: To understand the relationships between species that allows them to survive.
Symbiotic Relationships. Symbiosis Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
Population – group of individuals of the same species
Symbiotic Relationships. What is symbiosis? What it means: Two organisms that live together Temporarily or for a longer time At least one of the organisms.

Relationships in the Ecosystem. What are the types of relationships? 1)Predator / Prey 2)Competition 3)Symbiosis A) commensalism B) mutualism C) parasitism.
* Competition- when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use the same ecological resource Males competing for the ability to mate.
Ecological Interactions “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” ~John Muir, naturalist, Sierra Club.
PARASITE-THAT-EATS-TONGUES-AND-REPLACES-THEM- WITH SYMBIOSIS.
Symbiosis A relationship where two organisms (of different species) live together.
ORGANISMS CAN INTERACT IN DIFFERENT WAYS ORGANISMS INTERACT IN DIFFERENT WAYS SURVIVAL OF ONE SPECIES MIGHT DEPEND ON ANOTHER SPECIES –SYMBIOSIS = relationship.
RELATIONSHIPS Between Organisms: Ecological Interactions: Symbiosis.
Symbiotic Relationships. Interactions Between Organisms What’s the term for when one organism eats another?
Symbiotic Relationships Mutualism- benefits both organisms Commensalism- benefits one and the other is neither helped nor harmed Parasitism- benefits one.
Survival Relationships
Species Interactions. When organisms live together in a community, they interact constantly. These interactions help shape the ecosystem they live in.
Relationships within Ecosystems The who, what, where, when, why of it all.
SYMBIOSIS Your Subheading Here!.
*Refer to Chapter 16 in your Textbook. Learning Goals: 1. I can describe interactions that occur in a community. 2. I can differentiate between the types.
AIM: What are symbiotic relationships?
Competition, Predation and Symbiosis. Bellringer Name a biotic factor in a forest. Name two limiting factors for a population of lions. What is carrying.

Relationships in an Ecosystem

Predator-Prey Interaction in which one species consumes another. Ex. Lion eats a zebra Lion hunting zebra

Symbiosis An interaction between two or more organisms living in close physical association.

Mutualism A symbiotic relationship that each organisms benefits from. “mutual benefit” Ex. Bee pollinates a flower in exchange for nectar http://solarfountainblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/bee-flower-polinating.jpg

Mutualism Clown fish (Nemo) and the Sea Anemone Both get protection from one another http://study.com/cimages/multimages/16/Clownfish_and_anemone.png

Mutualism Humans and certain bacteria Bacteria get food from us, and help us digest http://genengnews.com/media/images/AnalysisAndInsight/Sept9_2013_2_40956732_StomachBacteria_GutBacteria_II1952005915.jpg

Mutualism Certain bacteria and Plants Plants get nitrogen from bacteria Bacteria get food from plants http://www.bbc.co.uk/staticarchive/a61abdc6c35be5914de1afb25bb2aa3e1a75f667.gif

Mutualism Oxpecker and Rhino The Oxpecker gets food and the Rhino gets cleaned http://photos.safaribookings.com/library/southafrica/xxl/Kruger_National_Park_013.jpg

Commensalism Symbiotic relationship where one organisms benefits and the other is not affected

Commensalism Whale shark and remora (type of fish) Remora gets “left-overs” and the whale shark is unaffected Whale shark with attached remora http://fine-art-prints-store.com/images/11861-remora.jpg

Commensalism Eyelash mites Mites get feed on the oils in our skin, we are unharmed http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/a6/61/2f/a6612fdb2aaeffbff0cc15e8eba2377c.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IwZ0t.jpg

Commensalism Cattle Egrets and Cows Egrets eat insects that the cows stir up https://leesbirdblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/eastern-cattle-egret-bubulcus-coromandus4-by-ian-montgomery.jpg

Parasitism Symbiotic relationship where organism benefits and the other is harmed

Parasitism Animals and Ticks https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/58/e4/11/58e4115ec5338fb4af137c4707da2266.jpg https://baycitiesanimalhospital.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/dog_tick_5148.jpg

Parasitism Tapeworm Lives inside animals http://s.hswstatic.com/gif/tapeworm-weight-loss-2.jpg http://www.askthecatdoctor.com/images/tapeworm-feline-parasites.jpg

Parasitism Botfly Larva (maggots) live in and eats the skin of animals

Parasitism Fish and the tongue eating louse Tongue parasite https://twistedsifter.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/cymothoa-exigua-insect-parasite-eats-fish-tongue.jpg

Competition Relationship between organisms in which they are using the same resources (food, water, territory, mates, etc.)

Intraspecific Competition Competitions between organisms of the same species

Intraspecific Competition Male snakes competing for mates Snakes wrestling

Interspecific Competition Competition between organisms of different species

Interspecific Competition Hyena and Lions in Africa https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1272/4711196614_3e42387d7d_b.jpg
