A Study Of 1 st Timothy Lesson #3 1 Timothy 2:1-8
The Priority Of Prayer (2:1) Even for Hymenaeus & Alexander 1 John 5:16-17 – If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, & He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, & there is sin not leading to death. (Sins of ignorance: Lev 5:14-20; Sins of presumption: Num 15:30- 31; Simon the Sorcerer: Acts 8:14-25)
The Priority Of Prayer (2:1) “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, & giving of thanks be made for all men” In the Apostles’ work (Acts 4:22-23; 6:1-4) It takes preparation (Mic 3:4; 1 Pet 3:12; Matt 5:23-24; Mark 11:25-26)
The Variety Of Prayer (2:1) “Supplication” request for a personal need “Prayers” the sacred act of addressing God “Intercessions” draw near & converse confidently “Giving of thanks” expressions of gratitude David (Psa 26:6-8; 69:29-33; 95:1-7) God’s peace flows to His children who are thankful (Phil 4:6; 1 Thess 5:18)
The Objects Of Prayer (2:2) “for kings & all who are in authority, [For this result] that we may lead a quiet & peaceable life in all godliness & reverence.”
The Reasons For Prayer (2:3-4) “For this is good [ beautiful, pleasing ] & acceptable [ agreeable ] in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who [God] desires all men to be saved [ not w/out exception - w/out distinction ] & to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
The Basis For Prayer (2:5-6) “For there is one God & one Mediator [ go- between, a medium of communication, an arbitrator, a reconciler ] between God & men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom [ a price paid to free a slave ] for all, to be testified in due time… Jesus intercedes too (Heb 7:25): to go to or meet a person for the purpose of conversation, consultation, or supplication ( Thayer ).
The Attitude In Prayer (2:7-8) “for which I was appointed a preacher & an apostle — I am speaking the truth in Christ & not lying — a teacher of the Gentiles in faith & truth. 8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands [ clean, blameless in regard to sin ], without wrath [ violent passion: Christians must be on good terms with each another ] & doubting [ disputing, debating, arguing ]
Prayer Preparation Will Make Our Prayers Effective (God takes note of our interest in addressing Him properly.)
