Presentation transcript:

The Industrial Revolution: Spread of Industrialization – U.S. Other countries with the “factors of production” were ready to industrialize The United States possessed many of the same resources that allowed Britain to industrialize US realizes this during a British blockade in the War of 1812 Resources: The US also had large deposits of coal & iron ore, fast moving rivers for transportation & a stable government Labor:Unlike Britain, factory workers were not farmers moving to the cities The US had a very large immigrant population to do the factory work Also, young women began to leave their rural homes to work in factories These women (mill girls) liked the idea that they could make some money as well as having some independence

Inventions: a young British mill worker, Samuel Slater recreated the spinning wheel from memory Later, Francis Lowell started mechanizing every part of the textile process Transportation: Like the British, the United States also expanded its railroad system during the Industrial Revolution The railroads were mainly built by Irish & Chinese Immigrants who were excluded from other jobs in the US The railroad would connect the US from coast to coast, which allowed the US economy to grow – RR’s were controlled by a few powerful companies Capital: To help pay for investments, many businessman began selling stock (part ownership) in their companies Corporations formed as a result of selling stock in companies. Businesses were now able to raise large amounts of money to further invest in the company

Create a Venn Diagram comparing British and US Industrialization -War of Coal -Iron Ore -Good, fast rivers -Stable government -Great Banking System -Large Immigrant Pop -Enclosure Movement -Railroads -New Inventions -Stock, Corporations -Investors -Colonies & powerful navy -Large female workforce
