OpenStorage Training Introduction to NetBackup

Agenda – Explanation of NetBackup Basics Architecture 1 Terminology 2 This is a sample Agenda/Preview slide. This slide is ideal for setting the scene at the beginning of your presentation by providing a big picture overview of what you plan to cover. To Change Titles in Shapes (i.e.: “Text here”): Select text. (Optional: Press Delete.) Begin typing desired text. To Change Font Color/Size: Select text, right-click and adjust the font setting on the Mini toolbar. Select desired attributes to change: font, size, boldness, color, etc. Note: many of the same commands can also be accessed from the Font group of the Home tab. To Change a Shape’s Fill Color: Select the desired object by clicking once on its edge. On the Home tab, click the Shape Fill button within the Drawing group to select a theme color from the Symantec color palette. To Delete a Shape: Select the desired object by clicking once on its edge. Press the Delete key on your keyboard. To Copy a Text Box or Shape: Select the text box or shape. Note: Make sure to select the entire object, not just the text, by clicking the edge of the text box or shape. Type Ctrl C (copy), click outside object, then type Ctrl V (paste) to place the object. Click and drag the pasted object to desired location. Management Objects 3 Introduction to NetBackup

NetBackup has a 3 tier Architecture Master Server Master Server Central point of control Media Servers The machines that perform the backups. Clients The machines that host the applications, databases and file systems that NetBackup protects. Introduction to NetBackup

The Master Server The master server is the NetBackup ‘brain’ Central place of control for all operations Each NBU domain contains only one master server. Users can monitor multiple domains through a 4th tier (NBU OpsCenter) All persisted information is stored at the master server The policy settings (which clients, which data/files, and what method?) The schedule settings (when should the backups occur?) E.g., run full backups every Saturday night between 11pm and 3am The catalog information (a record of everything that has been backed up) The device information (configuration info about storage devices) NBU persists information in flat files and in a relational database (called EMM = Enterprise Media Manager Introduction to NetBackup

The NetBackup Client ‘client’ refers to what NBU is protecting E.g., the database, the application, the host and its file system, the filer NetBackup has extensive application and database support – file systems, Oracle, Exchange, VMware, Hyper-V, DB2, SQL Server, SharePoint, Lotus Notes… It also refers to the client backup software (aka the agent footprint) The agent software does not necessarily live on the host. For example, on the NDMP filer. The NBU client software is responsible for intelligently scanning the production data and sending it to the backup server for storage. Introduction to NetBackup

Media Servers Media Servers perform the backups They control the I/O between client and the storage device. Storage devices = tape libraries + tape drives, intelligent disk appliances or simple disk file system NBU domains can have unlimited number of media servers. A master server can also be a media server. But, typically it is not configured to do backups because that would interfere with the scheduling and catalog maintenance workload. The media server is at the heart of OpenStorage. Introduction to NetBackup

OpenStorage Architecture Overview NetBackup Master Server Clients Configuration Database (EMM) Catalog Resource Manager Disk Service Backup Restore NetBackup Media Servers Remote Access (Configuration & Mgmt) Data Movement (bptm/bpdm) OpenStorage API Plug-ins Basic Disk Plug-in Advanced Disk Plug-in Pure Disk Plug-in OpenStorage Plug-in Introduction to NetBackup 7

How to Deploy Master Server 1 Install NetBackup NetBackup 6.5.x or later needs to be installed on the master server and any media servers that will use the storage device. DB NBU 2 Attach and Prepare Appliance ** There can be any connectivity between the media server and the device – direct-attached, NAS, SAN, etc. NBU NBU 3 Install OST Plug-in Software Your software package (containing plug-ins) must be installed on the media server. The OST software must be installed on any media server that uses the Storage Server. 4 Register device with NetBackup NetBackup queries device to ask its capabilities. Capabilities are stored in the EMM database and consulted during resource selection. Introduction to NetBackup 8

Preparing your device for use with NetBackup Assign a ‘storage server name’. Give the appliance a unique name. This name will be used throughout NBU’s user interfaces to uniquely identify the device. tnt2000a Divide the space into one or more LSUs. NetBackup’s user interfaces will refer to the LSUs as ‘disk volumes’ . Introduction to NetBackup 9

The ‘Basic Disk’ Storage Unit Specify the data mover Specify the media server that takes incoming client data and writes it to backup storage. Media Server: ajax.symantec.com Pathname to directory: …and the storage device Specify where the backup image will reside. /my/dir/stunit1/ Somewhat similar to tape A Media Manager storage unit definition identifies where the backup image will reside, but the robot, drives and tapes are defined and monitored separately. TLD(0) - DLT Tape Device : Tape pool 5 Tapes: 10 Introduction to NetBackup

The OpenStorage Disk Storage Unit Offers More Advanced Control Data Movers Storage Unit A means of specifying which media servers move the data to what device and to what extent to throttle job activity Storage Unit Storage Unit Storage Unit Storage Unit = Storage Server Tape Library Disk Pool The physical definition of the disk device Disk Pool Disk Pool Introduction to NetBackup

Configuration Configuration Steps: Configure Storage Server Configure Disk Pool Configure Storage Unit(s) Introduction to NetBackup

Choose a good name for your ‘Storage Type’ because it is an advertisement Note: NBU’s disk types are always listed if the corresponding license is present. Introduction to NetBackup
