Topic: Switching Registers Objective: To become proficient in code-switching EQ: How do we talk to people in diverse situations?

Code Switching: changing registers In linguistics, one of many styles or varieties of language determined by such factors as social occasion, purpose, and audience. Also called stylistic variation.linguisticslanguage More generally, register is used to indicate degrees of formality in language use. The different registers or language styles that we use are sometimes called codes. ON YOUR NOTES, WRITE THE DEFINITION FOR stylistic variation IN YOUR OWN WORDS

Types of registers Intimate register is the highly informal language used among family members and close friends, and may include private vocabulary known only to two people or a small group, as well as nonverbal cues exclusive to the pair or group. Example: “How’s my lil’ Snuggy Wuggy?”

Types of registers Casual register is the informal language of a broader but still well-defined social group, and includes slang, elliptical and elided sentences, and frequent interruption. Example: “Yo bro waz up?”

Types of registers Consultative register is moderately formal language that marks a mentor-protégé or expert-novice relationship, such as that between a doctor and a patient or a teacher and a student. Example: “Hello, Mr. Smith. How are you this morning?”

Types of registers Formal register is language spoken between strangers or in a technical context. This is the one we want to use in our collaborative groups. Example: “May I suggest another answer?”

Types of registers Frozen register is ritualistic or traditional, as in religious ceremonies or legal proceedings. Example: Welcome to the Hugh Brothers Industrial Center. Where tomorrow's world meets today's. Please remember that no flash photography is allowed during this tour...

Time to practice Identify the register of the following sentence: “Dude, that’s so stupid! No way I’m even listening to your dumb idea!”

Time to practice Now rewrite the sentence using formal register. “Dude, that’s so stupid! No way I’m even listening to your dumb idea!”

Elbow Partner Practice Have a short conversation in FORMAL REGISTER with your elbow partner. Partner A wants the job of facilitator when Partner B already claimed this job. Partner A is trying to convince Partner B to switch. Now have the same conversation in CASUAL REGISTER.
