A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat March 3, Physics Division Collaboration

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, Collaboration with ITSD Example on how a Division could collaborate with the ITSD approach in terms of cost cutting Areas of high cost: Telephone Backup Support IMAP Site security and Computer Security

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, Telephone - probably are recharged for obsolete units - should we choose a different type of service - should we move to voice over IP to cut long distance charges? - desktop sets seem to have large charges relative to private cell-phones - should we just go wireless altogether ( we have no office space anyway...) - is there any cut in ongoing operations cost that could be headed for modest one-time investment?

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, Backup We are currently doing backup in house - with 2 comp eng (physics staff) - one of which will eventually retire hopefully the young one will stay for a while ITSD service (if cost significantly reduced and adjusted) would be ideal issues: - we are not sure that everybody is backing up what they should - we keep adding on individual request work load to same person Need customized backup long-term plan division wide - one time data archival/special data sets (mostly managed by scientist) - Should we move to a server/client model (ala PDSF) ? - Do we go to other extreme to use laptops with R/W CD, and leave to each user to drag&drop for essential backups? - Is there some standard that we can move to that gives what we need (not clear what that is) with less labor involved? some kind of auto-configuration? support from “other countries” where labor is cheap?

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, Support - Security is an issue and we need to cover that at least division wide - How can we work out minimal support at lower cost but covering many machines - Standardization is already our goal - Server architecture? - Some appropriate mixture of professionals + work-study or co-op students to get the coverage we need? - should we standardize web servers or other high-risk hacker targets to evade potential problems? - what do we do about the 'dead printer' problem?

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, IMAP - recharges for disk usage too expensive - educate people to configure to evade IMAP charges we put data on local machines. now we need backup for the local machines… - we don't have the time to clean all the old junk accounts - more honest and efficient to just pay for what we are using - auto-hold on accounts once IMAP reaches 100MB? - can we just pay something as a net fee instead of digging through long lists of recharge data? - obsolete account recharges - long lists of $5 for people who left long time ago

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, Site Security and Computer Security We now have to track a lot of property (PDA, cell phone, laptop, etc.) more closely Would be nice to find a way to automate some/all of this...

A. CiocioITSD/CSAC Retreat - March 3, Conclusion We have identified areas of high cost and inefficient use of money Cost cutting in those areas require discussion and close collaboration with ITSD
