Introduction to CBS Unit Adversity and Resilience Mrs. R. Walker Language Arts

Definitions Resilience - the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. Adversity - difficulties; misfortune. Words that mean the same - misfortune, bad luck, trouble, difficulty, hardship, distress, disaster, suffering, affliction, sorrow, misery, tribulation, woe, pain, trauma

Big Ideas and Goals How does a person overcome adversity? How does a society prevail in the face of adversity? You will be reading texts that explore adversity. You will be able to identify the problems your text deals with and how each person showed resilience and overcame adversity. You will be able to identify how people use adversity to make society better.

Final Products - Summative You will write an essay using multiple texts to answer the following prompt: What characteristics are necessary for people as individuals and as a society to possess in order to prevail in the face of adversity? You will also create a tri-fold brochure that addresses an adversity, gives a list of characteristics needed to overcome adversity, and a minimum of two national and two local resources for people experiencing adversity.

Essential Questions 1.What is “adversity” and “resilience?” 2.What adversities have you experienced as a member of our society? 3.How have you prevailed or shown resilience when faced with adversities as a member of our society? 4.What adversities have individuals and societies faced globally and nationally? How have individuals and societies prevailed or shown resilience when faced with adversities? 5.What characteristics are necessary for people as individuals and as a society to possess in order to prevail in the face of adversity? 6.How can I equip people facing adverse situations or conditions with the necessary information and resources to overcome such adversities?
