Create a web or diagram of your topic and major points by Linda Brumfield Paragraph 1: Begin with a paragraph containing a hook (See hooks lesson) which piques the reader's interest and introduces or refers to your topic. In non-fiction pieces, it may contain a thesis statement - a topic sentence for the entire piece which names the main ideas of your story. Other times, you may not want to give away all your juicy surprises or secrets of your story. Paragraph 2: This first supporting paragraph should be a subtopic/supporting detail of your topic/main idea. It must contain a topic sentence and several supporting details for your main topic. Paragraph 3: This first supporting paragraph should be a different subtopic/supporting detail of your topic/main idea. It must contain a topic sentence and several supporting details for your main topic. Paragraph 5: This paragraph wraps up or summarizes the main ideas of your story. In non-fiction, it changes but restates the thesis statement. Make it interesting! Name your topic. All other paragraphs must support your topic in some way. Paragraph 4: This first supporting paragraph should be a different subtopic/supporting detail of your topic/main idea. It must contain a topic sentence and several supporting details for your main topic.
