Aims To discuss disabilities and additional support needs To discuss accessibility issues To understand the perceptions people have about disabilities To acknowledge diversity and understand that it is everyone’s responsibility to challenge discrimination

Activity Work in small groups to discuss the statements you will be given/shown about disabilities. Report back to the rest of the class what you think about the statements

People with disabilities are very brave

Wheelchair use is very confining. People are ‘wheelchair bound’.

All blind people learn braille.

People who are blind have better hearing.

Deaf people cannot use the phone.

All deaf people cannot speak.

People with disabilities do not have the same feelings as people without disabilities.

Children should not ask people about their disabilities or say, ‘What’s wrong with you?’

If you can walk you can’t be disabled.

People with disabilities have a poor quality of life.

Definition A disability is defined as ‘having difficulty doing day-to-day tasks for a period of 12 months or longer due to a physical or mental difficulty’.

It is estimated that 1 in 7 people in the UK have some form of disability.
