Pan of a classroom. -Voice over of a concerned teacher who syllabus was completely pirated by a fellow colleague. - “I can not believe Ethan stole my entire syllabus and used it as his own – right off my website. I put a great deal of time and effort into that piece of paper and the least he could have done was give me credit!”

-Show teacher thinking The teacher is angry with her colleague and she feels she sue him for copyright infringement.

Log on to website: Click on a few students questions and answers.

-show a student working at a computer Voice: A graduate student is working on a paper that is going to be published in the next Scientific American magazine. However, he is unsure who will get the full credit for the work; him or the university!?!

-show a html screen - A professor is creating standards for a new distance learning class. The professor is getting paid, using the universities technology and software, and this is part of their job description, but who owns these standards – the professor or the university?

-Show a girl going dizzy -What is this theft called? Can anyone stop this??

- The term intellectual properties is part of the U.S. Constitution (art. 1, sec. 8) which protects these properties by giving protection of exclusive rights “to promote the progress of science and useful arts by securing for limited times the authors and inventors the exclusive rights to their respective writings and discoveries” (Nemire, 2007).

-There are also laws, offices, & organization to protect these rights. -Say names as they fly across the screen: Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA), Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) act of 2001, Copyright Office, American Library Association, World Intellectual Properties Organization (WIPO), & Center for Academic Integrity, just to name a few.

-Show little child -Little child asks: “so do we want to copyright everything?”

-NO! Give brief explanation that copyrighting all material can cut down on collaboration and further understanding of ideas of thoughts.

-Show adult -“Ok, but I am still not sure if this intellectual properties thing is good or bad still.”

-Show picture or video of Barry Britt -Barry Britt, the keynote speaker at tonight’s conference, will continue to inform you on the in’s and out’s of intellectual properties. Barry is the executive producer of the website, Soundzaboud.com. Barry is also very knowledge about concerning copyright law of information that is web-based which would fall under intellectual properties law.

-
