Iwo Jima Memorial Picture taken on the Fourth of July Built in 1951 Bears two inscriptions: “In honor and memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps. who have given their lives to their country since 10 November 1775 “Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue”

Iwo Jima Memorial It was made to look like the picture taken at the top of Mount Suribachi on Febuary 23 rd, 1945 The men are thirty-two feet tall and the flag pole is sixty feet long The men in the photo are Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon Block, Pfc. Franklin Sousley, Pfc. Rene Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, and Pm2 John Bradley

Appeal This picture has an emotional appeal. It evokes a feeling of extreme pride and patriotism. What emotion(s) does this picture make you feel?

Color There are a lot of blue and white in the background because of the fireworks. The statue is cast in bronze but the current lighting in the picture makes it look gray. The flag is waving in the wind and looks like a red blur.

Audience The intended audience is those who were visiting Washington, D.C. and the memorials there. The real audience is everybody who has seen the memorial to those who have lost a loved one who served to those who actually served

Technique The photographer used the very little lighting of the fireworks and the flood light to create the mood of the picture
