Thesis Statements Mrs. Lumpkins-Marshall

Do Now

OBJECTIVE I can identify a thesis statement in a text, analyze its purpose and predict the evidence that supports it

Mastery of the Objective Thesis Statement There were 637 fatalities last year due to car accidents. To reduce the number of highway fatalities our country needs to enforce the national law that designates twenty-one as the legal minimum age to drink, set up check points on major holidays, and take away licenses from convicted drunk drivers.” These steps will help make highways safer.

Self Assessment 0 Even with help, I am confused and do not understand 1 I can do this with help or an example in front of me 2 I can do this on my own without help. I can demonstrate understanding 3 I can do this on my own. I can demonstrate understanding. I can teach someone else how to do this.

A Thesis Statement is:  A statement that contains the essay’s main point(s), an opinion and one of the following.  The answer to a question that you have posed.  The solution for a problem you have identified  A statement that takes a position on a debatable topic

A Thesis Statement: 1. Makes an argument, explains a topic, and/or analyzes an issue. 2. Presents the writer's position. 3. Captures the reader's interest and focuses that interest on the topic.

3 Types of Thesis Statements  Persuasive  Analytical  Expository

Persuasive An persuasive thesis makes a claim based on opinion, evaluation, or interpretation of a topic and the essay proves this claim with specific evidence. *If you have been asked to argue a point or choose a side on an issue, this is likely the type of thesis you will use.

Analytical An analytical thesis breaks the topic down into parts, the essay examines each part, and determines how each part relates to the whole topic. *If you have been asked to analyze a topic, issue, or reading, this is the type of thesis you should use.

Expository An expository (explanatory) thesis explains something to the audience and the essay provides examples of explanation *If you have been asked to narrate a story or explain a process, this is likely the type of thesis you will use.

How can knowing how to find and analyze a thesis statement help you in the real world? Real World Connections

Practice -What is the purpose of the thesis statement? High school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue community service projects before entering college in order to increase their maturity and global awareness.

Practice -What is the purpose of the thesis statement? A Superbowl Ring, the Stanley Cup and Wimbledon Championships are all accomplishments admired by athletes.

Practice -What is the purpose of the thesis statement? An analysis of the college admission process reveals one challenge facing counselors: accepting students with high test scores or students with strong extracurricular backgrounds.

Practice -What is the purpose of the thesis statement? The life of the typical college student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers.

Self Assessment 0 Even with help, I am confused and do not understand 1 I can do this with help or an example in front of me 2 I can do this on my own without help. I can demonstrate understanding 3 I can do this on my own. I can demonstrate understanding. I can teach someone else how to do this.

 What is the topic of the text?  What is the main idea?  What is the author’s purpose in writing this?  What is the argument or debatable issue? Things to consider Topic One general subject Main Idea Key concept or idea Thesis Debatable Issue

“The Cuban Bee Hummingbird” The Cuban bee hummingbird is a species that is native to Cuba. With a length of five centimeters, it’s the smallest bird in the world. The bird is found in the forest and woodlands of Varadero, Cuba. The tiny bird feeds on insects and nectar found there. The habitat of the Cuban bee hummingbird – the world’s smallest bird- must maintain its perfect balance to support such a fragile creature.

What’s in Your Lunch? Do you know what your child is eating for lunch at school? Most students eat a lot more than the recommended daily allowance of sugar and not enough fruits and vegetables. Half of all American school children consume nine times the recommended daily allowance of sugar. Schools should be required to replace chocolate bars and chips with healthy alternatives.

The Civil War: A Debatable Issue The Civil war was one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on American soil. The nation was divided between the North and South with each side willing to die for their beliefs. Both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against tyranny and oppression, Northerners focused on the oppression of slaves while Southerners defended their own right to self- government.

The Trouble with Television It is difficult to escape the influence of television. If you fit the statistical averages, by the age of 20 you will have been exposed to at least 20,000 hours of television. You can add 10,000 hours for each decade you have lived after the age of 20. The only thing Americans do more than watch television are work and sleep. Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor’s degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Russian. If it didn’t, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it.
