 Portugal is located beside Spain and Europe  Brazil had heavy jungles which made both mining and farming difficult, the Portuguese were in no hurry to settle here  The Portuguese first used Native American labor then African slaves to work on their farms

 Pedro Cabral Vespucci- explored the Brazilian coastline for the king of Portugal in  Farming sugar was their main export  Slaves worked on Plantations  Working on the sugar plantations, the colonizers became very wealthy  Today, the result of becoming a colony gave way to a diverse population

 Colonized the Hudson River Valley  Enjoyed parties and social events  Brought their celebration of the feast of St. Nicholas and the legend of Sinterklaas  Enjoyed outdoor activities; skating  The Native Americans taught the colonists to hunt, fish, and gather native plants  Farmed corn, pumpkins and other vegetables  The Dutch brought with them tomatoes, lettuce, coleslaw, cookies, and waffes

 Peter Minuit- set up a Dutch colony in 1626, and was taken over in 1664 by the English  He was part of the Dutch West India Company  He was sent to New Netherland in 1625 to look for tradable goods other than animal pelts  He bought Manhattan from the Indians for about 60 guilders, or approximately 500 dollars in today’s money

 Dutch holidays and traditions are still practiced today; such as calling a neighbor on New Year’s Day, and celebrating the visit of St. Nicholas  Merchants gave the city a bustling commercial atmosphere
