Plasma Membrane Basic fluid mosaic model c Plasma Membrane (5’)- KjBs Active & passive transport ( aAH0)

Cell membranes are Phospholipid Bilayers a. 2 layers of phospholipids b. Proteins embedded in membrane c. Carbohydrate markers on cell surface d. Cholesterol to keep the membrane fluid

Functions of the Cell Membrane 1. Protect cell 2. Control incoming and outgoing substances 3. Maintain ion concentrations of various substances 4. Selectively (Semi) permeable - allows some molecules in, others are kept out

Fluid Mosaic Model – the cell membrane is not fixed- proteins “float” in the membrane

3 Types of Passive Transport Passive Transport Does NOT require energy Moves molecules from HIGH  LOW 1.Diffusion- the movement of molecules from HIGH  LOW 2.Facilitated Diffusion -with the help of transport proteins a.Transport Proteins are specific – they “select” only certain molecules to cross the membrane b.Transports larger or charged molecules 3. Osmosis – the movement of water from high  low concentration

Active Transport REQUIRES energy Moves molecules from LOW  HIGH 1. Endocytosis: taking bulky material into a cell Cell membrane in-folds around particle How a cell gets food or other large molecules it needs

Active Transport 3. Exocytosis: Forces material out of cell The membrane surrounding the material fuses with cell membrane. This is how a cell gets rid of waste.
