Who is involved? Your child Your child’s teachers Your child’s Guidance Counselor The Assistant Principals Your child’s friends (word of mouth) You!

What are Special Permission Classes? Classes that have pre-requisites and other qualifying criteria Honors classes Research classes Advanced Placement classes Post A.P. classes Other advanced classes

Timeline JANUARY/FEBRUARY: Gather Information Read the Course Guide on website Planning worksheet (last page of guide) Go over your child’s grades on their transcript Check Naviance, accessible through bxscience.edu Plan for Placement Tests: AP Calculus BC: February 9, 2016 Honors Algebra II/Trig: February 9, 2016 AP Music Theory: February 23, 2016

Friday, February 3PM ONLINE View Opens in Naviance Students will know the classes for which they have been pre-approved IMPORTANT: Students can APPLY to classes for which they have not received pre-approval

Monday, February 29, Elective Day Students have the opportunity to speak with teachers and Assistant Principals about elective, honors and Advanced Placement classes for next year. Students can speak with their guidance counselors about their classes for next year as well.

Who is EXCLUDED from Special Permission classes? Students with suspended privileges are not allowed to have Special Permission classes. Suspended privileges = 1 cut or more All cuts must be cleared (or detention served) immediately.

Application Period Students may apply to classes if they were not already pre-approved:  Application due date is March 4. Who can apply? Students who are interested in the courses but do not meet the initial baseline criteria. Students can obtain applications online, in department offices, from department webpages, and from their teachers.

March 14: Registration Opens on Naviance at 5:00pm Students will register in Naviance for their classes. Students are urged to speak to their guidance counselors, current teachers, and assistant principals before they actually register, especially if they have questions. Students who register for more than three A.P. classes will need parental permission.

Registration Closes (March 3PM) Students must have registered on Naviance. After courses have been checked over, students will see “approved” next to “current status” on their course request page in Naviance. Approval only means that the requests satisfy a Bronx Science program, it does not guarantee student will get those classes. Finalized programs will be distributed to students no earlier than September.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW Students with suspended privileges must clear their cuts or serve detention immediately or risk their access to special permission classes. Students must see their guidance counselor if they have questions about Naviance. Students will lose special permission classes if there are changes in their June grades and/or privilege status.

CRUCIAL Students need to select carefully because what they choose in Naviance will determine their classes for next year. Changes will not be made in September. Students will not be permitted to drop classes if they don’t “like” them. Students must also choose ALTERNATES that they are willing to take. They will be expected to honor their commitment to those classes should they receive them instead of their first choices.

EVEN MORE CRUCIAL Students who fail to register by the deadline, will be given generic programs, chosen by their guidance counselors

Oh no! What if I change my MIND? Students will be given SEVERAL opportunities to change the requests that they initially made. The Program Chair will contact students throughout April and May to give them the opportunity to refine or change their classes. Students will receive preliminary programs in the summer (by ). It is important that students check their bxscience and Naviance homepage regularly for programming and other communication from the school. Once students receive their programs in September, programs cannot be changed
