Why Immunology for Pharmacists?? Agents acting on the Immune system: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) Antihistamines Salicylates Immunomodulation; drugs that activate or suppress the immune system

Keep in mind.. 1. Many anti-inflammatory drugs are available over the counter so there is a potential for abuse and overdosing. 2.Patients on anti-inflammatory drugs block the signs and symptoms of a condition, sometimes, make it hard to correctly diagnose. 3. Patients might combine these drugs and unknowingly induce toxicity.

NSAIDs Flurbiprofen Ibuprofen Naproxen Diclofenac

Mesalazine / Mesalamine Salicylates ASA Mesalazine- inflammatory bowel diseases; ulcerative colitis, Chron’s disease. Mesalazine / Mesalamine

Immunosuppressant drugs T cell inhibitors and anti-proliferative drugs Tacrolimus Mycophenolate mofetil Cyclosporin Sirolimus/Rapamycin Tacrolimus and sirolimus- prevent rejection of a transplant. Block IL-2 response. Mycophenolate mofetil- organ transplant rejection, autoimmune diseases. Inhibit T and B cell growth. Cyclosporin and azathioprine- prevent rejection of a transplanted organ and act against autoimmune diseases. Cyclophosphamide- lymphomas, leukemia, brain cancers. Autoimmune diseases; DMARD. Azathioprine Methotrexate Cyclophosphamide

Immunosuppressant drugs Glucocorticoids Prednisolone Methylprednisolone Budesonide Triamcinolone betamethasone

Immunosuppressant drugs Leukotriene antagonists Leukotrienes are very important agents in the inflammatory response. Some, such as LTB4 have a chemotactic effect on migrating neutrophils, and as such help to bring the necessary cells to the tissue. Leukotrienes also have a powerful effect in bronchoconstriction and increase vascular permeability. These antagonists are advised for the prevention of allergic asthma. Montelukast Zafirlukast Zileuton

Antibodies IL-2R antagonists Efalizumab Rho (D) immunoglobin Daclizumab and Basiliximab- binds IL-2 Rs on T cells. For prevention of organ rejection. Efalizumab- Withdrawn. IL-2R antagonists Basiliximab Daclizumab

Immunostimulant drugs Imiquimod IL-2 Imiquimod- Skin and genitalia cancers. Activates macrophages, NK cells and B cells through TLR7 causing IL-6, TNF-α and INF-α. IFNs- Hepatitis C treatment. IL-2- Chronic viral infections, HIV. Peginterferon alpha 2a Peginterferon alpha 2b
