Needles and Syringes

Common Gauges Common Gauges: 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 27 Large gauge needles  The lower the number, the larger the gauge  16, 18, 20  Used for horses, swine, and cattle Small gauge needles  The higher the number, the smaller the gauge  21, 22, 23, 25, 27  Used for cats, dogs, and exotic animals

Syringes Most common syringe sizes are insulin: 1, 3, 6, 12, 20, 35, and 60 ml. The 1 ml syringes are called tuberculin syringes The smallest syringe is the insulin syringe Insulin syringes come with attached needles and are measured in increments called units

Syringes Luer-Lok tip: has a threaded tip to hold needles securely Slip tip: this is the standard syringe tip Eccentric tip: used to get a straighter angle for IV injections Catheter tip: used to administer oral medications and liquefied food
