Similes and Metaphors Do Now #4 What is a simile? What is a metaphor? What types of language are these called? Today’s Objective: Students will apply their knowledge of figurative language by taking notes, Reader’s Workshop, and working collaboratively with 90% accuracy. Today’s Standards: Reading 1.1 Identify idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes in prose and poetry.

Figurative Language A simile is a figure of speech that uses like or as to compare two unlike things Example: The world is like a stage. A metaphor implies or directly states that two unlike things are similar. A metaphor does not use like or as. Example: All the world’s a stage.

Reader’s Workshop: Similes and Metaphors As you are reading today, try to find a simile or metaphor in your book. If you can not find either, make one of your own based off of your book. Be ready to share your sentences and whether each is a metaphor or simile by the end of the reading time. We will now be reading independently. Remember, reading is thinking, so we must remain silent during this time.
