LRC STUDY GROUP AND WORKSHOP TRAINING Spring, 2016
FACILITATING STUDY GROUPS What is the objective of a study group? Who will lead study groups?
BEFORE THE SESSION If you are assigned to a particular instructor and/or course, check in with the instructor whenever possible Review previous session(s) Have a sense of where you might take the conversation if the students don’t have goals of their own Gather materials as needed and make sure you’ve got a large enough space Let the front desk know where you will be and for how long
IN THE BEGINNING Introductions Review Plan
DURING THE SESSION Elicit information from students Find out what they already know Get them to remind each other Keep the group on track Don’t let one or two voices dominate Evaluate student information and correct as necessary Your role is to facilitate their understanding of course material, not to teach the course
AT THE END OF THE SESSION Review major concepts Assign follow-up work Identify a preliminary plan for next session
FACILITATING WORKSHOPS What’s the difference between a study group and a workshop? Scheduling workshops
WORKSHOP DEVELOPMENT Coming up with ideas Writing a Workshop Plan Outcome/Goal Statement Plan Assessment Gathering Materials
