PUT TITLE HERE Knowing Your Students Slide Deck No. 1 Ministry of Education, 2009

Knowing Your Students This first slide deck introduces: Learning for All K – 12 and its link to Education for All K – 6; The theme “Knowing Your Students’ Provides a workshop framework to begin to unpack the theme ‘Knowing Your Students’

Learning for All K – 12 Special Education Policy and Programs Branch is leading the development of a K – 12 resource guide as a follow-up to Education for All K – 6 The working title of the document is Learning for All K – 12/L’apprentissage pour tous: de la maternelle à la 12e année

Learning for All K – 12 Our Shared Beliefs Through province wide consultations with parents, educators and educational stakeholders in spring 2008, the guiding principles of Education for All K – 6 were confirmed as essential to any effort to improve the achievement of all students and to close the achievement gap

Learning for All K – 12 The two key tenets of Learning for All K – 12 are: Personalization Precision

Learning for All K – 12 Personalization of Learning Share a personal learning experience that had a positive impact for you as a student when you were in school Reflect upon the factors that made this experience positive

Learning for All K – 12 Personalization of Learning Share a personal learning experience that was unsuccessful for you as a student when you were in school Reflect upon the factors that made this experience unsuccessful

Learning for All K – 12 Personalization of Learning Brainstorm what you know about personalization of learning?

Learning for All K – 12 Personalization of Learning If personalization starts with knowing your students, what are some of the benefits in “knowing your students”?

Learning for All K – 12 If personalization of learning starts with knowing your students, what are some of the challenges in “knowing your students?”

Learning for All K -12 Sources for knowing your students: The Ontario Student Record (OSR) Consultations with previous teachers Consultations with parents and/or students Interest inventories Classroom observation Assessments (e.g., diagnostic, pre-tests, conferencing, student portfolio, etc.)

Learning for All K – 12 Personalization starts with: Knowing your students Knowing where they are at in their learning Knowing where they need to go in their learning Knowing how to get them to where they need to go in their learning

Learning for All K - 12 Reflect upon your current teaching assignment Develop a plan, individually and collectively, about how you can know your students better in order to improve your connections with students and effect positive change in their learning
