MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE ELQA during LS1 train, Special measurements and NCs Magnet replacement: AIV Splices consolidations: PAQ_LS1 Non Conformities 1

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 2 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement What is A.I.V. ? Why is it needed? How is it performed? When is it performed? ELQA resources estimated? Safety issues

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 3 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement What is A.I.V. ? o It is a test that verifies the continuity and polarity of the ARC and DS superconducting circuits during the assembly phase of the machine. o The Line N circuits and the Spools circuits are checked. o HVQN is part of AIV. It verifies the electrical continuity and High Voltage insulation (1000V) of the Line N: After removal After transport, before reinstallation, laying down After re-insertion, before connection

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 4 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement How is AIV performed? AIV is performed in two steps AIV1 (Line N inserted before US welding) and AIV2 (Line N US welded). The continuity of a circuit is checked by sensing a current at both sourcing and sinking ends. The polarity and the type of the connected magnet are checked by measuring the expected voltage between the magnet voltage tap i.e. the port A and the sinking end

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 5 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement When is it performed?  During LS1, AIV must be performed whenever a magnet is being replaced: 19 magnets ! A.I.V activity start in June 2013 and finish October 2013

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 6 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement ELQA - AIV resources? o Hardware: we have 2 AIV measuring systems available. One system is needed per AIV test. o Test duration: once the measuring system is installed on place (need Pefra to transport it), the test duration is about 2 hours / AIV test. o Manpower planed: 1 team of 3 persons from HNINP, can be doubled if needed.

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 7 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement ELQA - AIV resources? o Manpower : we should be able to cope our needs with the collaboration from HNINP and the CERN staff from EE section. o Software: AIV is based on a Labview program, already used during machine assembly (WinXP). We will not invest resources to update the program.

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 8 Arc Interconnection Verification: magnet replacement Safety issue? o The area under test is patrolled by the ELQA team before starting the test. o One person has to be present at each extremity of the test area during all the time when the high voltage is applied. o Habilitation éléctrique B1 o Standard safety course to access the tunnel o Safety equipment to access the tunnel: helmet, front light, safety shoes, bio-cell, jacket…

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 9 Partial Assembly Qualification during LS1: “train” follow-up What is PAQ during LS1 ? What are the requirements? Duration for PAQ test? PAQ resources? PAQ safety issue?

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 10 What is PAQ during LS1 What is Partial Assembly Qualification for LS1 ? o Initially used during LHC assembly, the procedure is adapted for LS1 condition: segment length is the whole sector! o The PAQ test consists of two steps of verifications: Electrical continuity verification of spool-pieces circuits (M1 and M2 lines). High Voltage qualification on RB (in M3 line), RQD, RQF and Spool-pieces circuits, (M1 and M2 lines).

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 11 PAQ configuration during LS1 o Configuration of a sector during consolidation: All busbars must be kept insulated from each other and from ground at each level of the consolidation work. This is the duty of the consolidation work teams.

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 12 PAQ requirements during LS1 What are the requirements from ELQA for PAQ during LS1 «train» follow-up ? o DC warm cables must be disconnected from the current leads, the instrumentation cables as well (ELQA team, already done during TP4 campaign) o Before starting the consolidation of a sector, the insulation must be removed from RB, RQD, RQF and the spool circuits open at one interconnection on the odd point  TE/MSC-LMF o These conditions must be kept during the whole period of splices consolidation in the sector. o Preparation work for PAQ test will start before 17:00. At 17:00 (5PM), the consolidation work, including QC must be completed. The patrol will start at 5PM. During High Voltage test, no personnel but ELQA team must stay in the ARC (safety condition).

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 13 PAQ: How long does it last? When is it performed?  During LS1, PAQ must be performed during the whole period of splice consolidation, daily basis, from 5PM! PAQ activity start in May 2013 and finish April 2014

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 14 PAQ resources during LS1 ELQA resources? o Hardware: we will have up to 8 TP4 measuring systems. One system is needed per PAQ test. o Test duration: once the measuring system is installed on place (need Pefra to transport it), the test duration is about 1.5 hours / PAQ test, without any fault ! o Manpower: 2 teams of 3 persons (HNINP) + CERN Staff o Software: use TP4 software (HNINP+ M.B.) and signature WISH tool (SMACC)

MPE Workshop for LS1 / 22 & 23 Nov. 2012, G. D’Angelo TE/MPE-EE 15 PAQ safety issues during LS1 For safety issue o Put the blinking warning lights on both extremities of the part of the subsector under test. Lamps should be placed in a visible position on the floor. o The area under test is patrolled by the ELQA team before starting the test to ensure that no one is in the subsector under test o One person has to be present at each extremity of examined length during all the time when the high voltage is applied. o During the patrol, verify that the segment under test is insulated from anything else (visual inspection). o Habilitation éléctrique B1 o Standard safety course to access the tunnel o Safety equipment to access the tunnel: helmet, front light, safety shoes, bio-cell, jacket… o Will finish “late at night”. Cars are foreseen for teams in the tunnel!
