Topic Selection and Research

Turn in Letters of Commitment and ten dollar fee ASAP Topic Background Research Form due this Friday

Begin with a broad idea and then narrow it down. Choose a personal interest. Consider time, cost and safety.

17 categories and many subcategories – examples: biochemistry, engineering, physics and astronomy, earth and planetary science, environmental sciences, energy and transportation, etc. - see website for more! Topics to avoid: people, molds/bacteria, animals (high regulations for safety) Having trouble? Take a look at the science buddies website for ideas.

Think variety of sources: books, magazines, websites, experts… More sources, more variety= better research

Next step: Research plan (due Nov. 13) Stay organized! Keep everything collected in a folder or binder. References are important! Don’t forget to cite all of your materials as you research. Topic forms due this Friday!
