Negative effect of acid rain The acid in acid rain lowers the pH and strips it of carbonate ions this hampers the ability of marine animals that harness calcium carbonate that they use to make a hard outer shell or exoskeleton. This affects animals such as sea urchins, shellfish, corals, and certain types of plankton these animals provide food and habitat to ecosystems these are very important animals, so their demise could affect entire ecosystems in the ocean

Definition of Acid Precipitation Acid percipitation is Pollution in the form of dissolved Chemicals Burning of gasoline, oil and coal creates toxic chemicals that combine with water and fall as precipitation Carried by winds Picture of how acid rain is formed

Why should we be concerned about acid rain We should be concerned about acid rain because you cannot tell the difference between clean rain and acid rain the harm to humans is not direct but the chemicals that make up acid rain are harmful sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (Nox) do damage human health these gases interact in the Atmosphere to form fine sulfur and nitrogen particles and can be inhaled into peoples lungs

What we can do to control or stop acid rain There is several ways to reduce acid rain properly called acid deposition ranges from societal changes to individual action it is important that acid deposition be reduced not only in the us and Canada but also throughout the world to reduce affects on man made structures
