Complementary Alternative Medicines- Aroma Therapy HW499 Bachelor's Capstone in Health and Wellness By Crystal Peacock

What will we be learning about  What is aromatherapy?  Why is this a CAM practice?  How will aromatherapy help?  What types of essential oils are used in aromatherapy?  How can I use this?

What is aroma therapy?  The art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit (nana.org).

Why is this a CAM practice?  The inhalation of essential oils stimulates the part of the brain connected to smell - the olfactory system; a signal is sent to the limbic system of the brain that controls emotions and retrieves learned memories.  Aromatherapy is a homeopathic technique which is all natural without use of westernized medicine practices.

How will aromatherapy help?  Aromatherapy can help with stimulating the brain to have a psychological affect.  Aromatherapy can help with stress, anxiety, lower blood pressure, aid in sleep due to insomnia, and help with infections.  Aromatherapy can be used with a wide range of medical conditions  Aromatherapy can help with pregnancy and symptoms (

Other uses of Aromatherapy?  Insect repellant know as citronella.  Household and laundry cleaners

What types of essential oils are used in aromatherapy?  Tea Tree-Bacterial, fungal, and viral infections  Peppermint-Headaches, fever, nausea, and fatigue  Lavender -Minor burns, insomnia, pain relief, and wound care  German chamomile- Inflammatory skin problems  Bergamot -Mild antidepressant and tonic  Rosemary -Stimulant and anti-infective agent  Eucalyptus -Respiratory infections  Ginger -Nausea and inflammation  Lemongrass -Fungal infections  Basil -Insect repellent and anti-parasitic  Mandarin - Stomach upset and restlessness, particularly in children

How can I use it?  Aromatherapy can be used/delivered with:  Massage  Diffusion  Drops  In bath water  Oil Warmers or burners

Precautions with Aromatherapy  Contact your physician or doctor to make sure that aromatherapy is safe for you and/or can benefit your condition.  Children younger than age 5 should not use aromatherapy, because they can be very sensitive to the oil. Nor should anyone use oils near the eyes or mouth, because irritation of the skin and membranes may occur.  Do not swallow the oils used in aromatherapy. Many of the oils are potent and can be dangerous if swallowed.

Questions  Aromatherapy has many uses and can benefit most to all people when you find out what benefits you  Relieving stress is important and aromatherapy can help ease your mind when incorporated through exercise, yoga, and meditation.  These are just some of the basic use for aromatherapy.
